Arctic Griddle McRib Rolled Ice Cream

McRib Ice Cream?

Over the years a number of interesting McRib creations have been shared with us. This year we are looking to share some of these creations with others to see if they would be interesting in trying these creations. We start off with McRib Rolled Ice Cream.

We recently received word from Dave Mellick, the owner and Chief Engineer at Arctic Griddle LLC, a startup in Idaho. After 5 years of not being able to have a McRib, when the sandwich returned this year, he had to combine his Arctic Griddle technology with the fan favorite McRib sandwich. He shared his video from his preparation of the ice cream, and took time to have a short Q & A session.

1) What spawned your idea of creating McRib ice cream?

One of the most fun aspects of rolled ice cream is the ability to create unique and daring flavors. Youtube is full of unusual rolled ice cream videos such as BigMac, Whopper, pizza, and French fry ice cream. I felt the McRib was certainly deserving as well.

2) How long have you been a McRib fan?

As long as I can remember, well over 30 years. Unfortunately, our area doesn’t have it offered most years so when it does show up I have to take advantage of it to the fullest.

3) Do you order your McRib with any customizations?

Nope, I stick to the original, the way it was intended.

4) How was the McRib ice cream vs the original McRib?

Colder. You could still taste everything from the McRib but with a sweeter and creamier texture. It would definitely be an acquired taste but it was fun to try.

5) How did you decide on using half of a sandwich?

We knew from other videos that using a full sandwich was going to be too much to make roll properly. So, we did two half tests. The first time we didn’t use nearly enough ice cream base. The second test turned out better but it was still not quite as easy to roll as regular ice cream.

6) If you were to make this again, would you customize your sandwich?

The onions and pickles add a lot of water content to the ice cream mix which makes it brittle. We could have omitted them and it probably would have rolled better but then it wouldn’t really taste like a McRib. So, we chose taste over form.

7) What lead you to create the Arctic Griddle?

We got our start with rolled ice cream by fixing up the cheap rolled ice cream machines from China of our local ice cream shop. From that work, we began helping out other rolled ice cream businesses in the USA to fix and repair their machines. One thing lead to another and we decided to manufacture a much higher quality rolled ice cream machine here in the USA.

8) Any last thoughts?

McRib ice cream certainly isn’t for everyone but it was fun to try and if it can help promote the McRib all the better. I’m hoping we won’t have to wait another 5 years in our area for one. I can only stock so many in my freezer!

New McRib In Germany

There is a new McRib being offered in Germany, and it might give your tastebuds a blast of crazy. As we have reported previously, the much loved McRib sandwich is offered year-round in Germany. To spice things up a little, Germany will be offering a Chili-Cheese with bacon McRib. The sandwich still will be built upon the classic McRib with a few notable differences. More specifically the changes will feature dropping the onion and pickles, add bacon on top of the McRib, add jalapeños, and finally add a layer of chili-cheese sauce before adding the top bun.

The sandwich carries a “New” icon on the McDonalds Germany online sandwich details. Thanks to a source in Germany (thanks Kaci!) we see this is being offered as part of the “Stars of America” promotion.

While we certainly know of McRib variations, this offering is one of the most unique. We do receive reports detailing individual fans variations, and know the McRib has global variation.

What do you think, is this something that you would like to try out?

McRib returns with a new twist in Central America

Twist on a Classic

Nearly a year ago, we saw the McRib return to Central America. Due to the popularity, it has again returned, however with a slight twist in the marketing of the sandwich. This year the sandwich is being advertised in it’s “classic” option as well as new “with cheese” and “with bacon” options.

Thus far the promotion appears to be limited to Guatemala, and just started being promoted there on October 5th, 2018. Their website doesn’t yet mention the McRib, and is still promoting their 50th Anniversary of the Big Mac. This Big Mac promotion is still ongoing in neighboring countries as well, so it is possible that the page will be updated to showcase the McRib as soon as other McDonalds stores in the region begin offering the sandwich.

Australia sees limited McRib return

Finally, the McRib has returned in Australia! Cameron Fitter (thank you!) found that the McRib is being tested at a handful of locations, with a potential expanded release this December.

The Australian McRib comes in around 1 dollar more than the Big Mac, making it unlikely to be offered there in the 2 for $5 or less options found at some US locations that offer it.

The last time we had a confirmed sighting in Australia was in 2012 as part of the Olympics.

Japan return of the McRib, has chance to become a regular menu item

Japan finally has had their wait for the McRib return come to an end! It is being temporarily offered as part of a contest where one of three reoccurring limited time sandwiches will become a regular menu item. They note it has been 7 years since they last had the McRib there, and is currently only the 8th time since 2001, see more about that release here.

The contest requires participants to either scan a QR code on the sandwich to vote, or to send out a tweet indicating they want their sandwich to win. The three sandwiches in the contest are the McRib, Teriyaki Chicken Filet, and a breakfast sandwich Tamago Double Mack. As of this post, the McRib is trailing the other two options.Voting results as of 5/19Reasons for why the McRib is behind? Well one fan explains that while the McRib tastes good, they do not like the non-circular bun.
