McRib Returns in Orlando October 12, 2011?

I received an email this evening from Chris Norris in the Florida area. Enclosed in this email is a monthly event calendar for The Orlando, FL area McDonalds. Chris found this insert at McDonalds, specifically at the McDonalds near Universal Studios.

Most interesting is the entry on October 12.

Zoom in on October 12
This promotion is consistent with what was offered in many parts of the Midwest last year, and the timing again matches up with the release last year (actually this is the same day of October that the first report with favorable reviews from last year showed up).

If you find the McRib, make sure to enter your sighting at http://mcriblocator.com. Also, send us a photo (photos@mcriblocator.com) of your receipt so that your sighting may be promoted to confirmed! Bonus for those that also send a photo of themselves enjoying the McRib. We will share these on the blog.

McRibs are BACK… in Japan!

While checking my twitter account this evening, I began noticing these posts:

I thought to myself, “No Way! I haven’t heard of McRibs in Japan before!”. I had to check it out. I clicked on one of the links to find this:

I know about zero Japanese (okay, I take that back, I know about 0,0001% … “Konnichiwa and Sayonara”), so I migrated over to google translate to find something like this …

Makkuribu” is Patti and juicy pork, sweet barbecue sauce complements the taste well, fresh, crisp lettuce, onion, lemon sauce that contains a suite,a hearty dish. “Double Mac rib” is “Makkuribu” pork products Patty’s another addition to the product’s hearty appetite for perfect autumn.”

Mmmmmmmmmm.

One more thing to check. McDonalds Japan. After randomly clicking here and there, I found the answer:

Anyone up for a trip? Do we have any fans from Japan? Would love to feature you here on the blog! Email us your photo (with a McRib of course) to: photos@mcriblocator.com

McRib to return in Ohio

A few days ago, one of our blog readers pointed us to the following story Woman wins McDonalds Breakfast. The owner of the McDonald’s was interviewed and he let it “slip” that the McRib would be returning along with Monopoly. Earlier this week McDonalds did launch their 2011 Monopoly Contest, so that component of the owner’s comments have proven true. This is also consistent with the release last year, where in some areas you were able to purchase a McRib combo with the Monopoly contest game pieces available.

2011 McRib Production in High Gear

I recently received an email from a source (thanks Stephen!) at Lopez Foods in Oklahoma City indicating that McRib patty production ramping up. They have increased production to 7 days per week in order to generate enough of the McRib patties for release in the near future. The McRib production goes to 7 day per week production, and as soon as the quota is reached, the McRibs patties are distributed to McDonalds.

For those of you that are not familiar with the suppliers for McDonalds, Lopez Foods is a family owned facility in Oklahoma City, OK. They are one of the main suppliers of Canadian Bacon, Hamburgers, Sausage Patties, and McRib patties to McDonalds and other corporations. Searching through the McDonalds site you can look for their suppliers and see their content for Lopez Foods.. Back in April of this year, Lopez Foods was showcased on Oklahoma Horizon. Here is the link to their video.

With the increased production, all signs indicate that the McRib will again be returning sometime yet this fall. Last year’s soft release in mid-October, and the patty production increase may hint to a similar release time frame this season.

McRib Fever

Have you caught McRib fever yet? If you have, the only known cure is to find and consume a McRib.

It is that time of year when we start thinking about the number of days until the return of the McRib. Will it be Mid October in many locations such as last year, early November, at all? Earlier this year we had reports from the field that various McDonalds locations had hinted at the return of the McRib in November, and other that there would be no return this year. Fortunately, you have the McRib Locator to aid you in your quest to cure the McRib fever that has started to spread across the country.

If you find the McRib, make sure to send us a photo (photos@mcriblocator.com) of your receipt so that your sighting may be promoted to confirmed! Minnesota State Fair McRib clones

My wife (Kim) and I have been making an annual trip to the Minnesota State Fair for several years now. At the tip of one of our friends (thanks Al Spacealien), we heard that there was a McRib clone at Sonny’s Spiral Spuds within the Food Building. Having a strong urge for a McRib, we thought it would be worth paying the State Fair inflated prices to see if it tasted good.

Fighting through a typical crowd within the Food Building we arrived at Sonnys Spiral Spuds. The line was not terribly long, and none of the patrons ahead of me ordered the “Mighty MacRib”.

After making my order, the cashier shouted to the cooks “Rib Sandwich”. I tried to watch them prepare the sandwich, however I was unable to see where the rib patty came from (ie crock pot, freshly grilled, etc). After what seemed to be a rather long wait considering the seemingly slow traffic at this booth, I was presented with my Mighty MacRib. First I noted that the hoagie bun was shaped a little more narrow than a traditional hoagie bun, and had sesame seeds on top.

No worries, the bun really isn’t the main attraction so I dived in. I took a few bites and passed it to Kim so she could try it.

We agreed that something with the sandwich failed to hit the expectations we had. After a few more bites, I decided it was something to do with the way the patty was prepared. It tasted as if it had been sitting around for a long time. Also the BBQ was bland. This might possibly have been the worst McRib clone I have had. While none I have tried have duplicated the McRib, at least they generally ease the craving for a little while.

I would rather have spent the $1 more to have the Donna’s Barbecue Sandwich version of the McRib. Their version at the fair may be served with excessive amounts of BBQ, however it is taken off of the grill when you order and has flavor. In fact, I nearly purchased one again this year when we walked by as I was so disappointed by the earlier version. This is saying a lot as we try not to buy the same items each year, rather attempt to try something new.

Do you have a review of a McRib clone that you would like to share? Feel free to leave a comment with your story.
